Maramures International Airport

The Architect’s Perspective
The design is defined by its dynamic, sweeping roofline, which serves as a contemporary reinterpretation of the steep pitches found in traditional Maramureș vernacular architecture. This expressive geometry creates a monumental sheltered volume that organizes the terminal’s internal functions—check-in, security, and boarding—under a singular, cohesive canopy. By utilizing a high-performance curtain wall system, the building achieves total transparency, ensuring that travelers remain visually connected to the runway and the surrounding landscape. The structural “V” supports provide a rhythmic skeleton that emphasizes the terminal’s verticality, while the expansive use of timber-toned finishes on the soffit adds a layer of material warmth to the industrial scale of the airport.
The Archviz Artist’s Perspective
From a visualization standpoint, this project is a study in volumetric light and large-scale environmental integration. The challenge lies in capturing the “sheen” of the airport’s vast surfaces—from the polished interior floors to the expansive glazing—while maintaining a sense of realism. The lighting strategy utilizes a crisp HDR environment to showcase the building’s interaction with the open sky, creating sharp reflections on the metallic roof and soft gradients across the wooden interior ceilings. Using “beauty shots” from the runway perspective, the visualization emphasizes the terminal as a luminous beacon, utilizing advanced PBR shaders to differentiate between the frosted glass of the secondary structures and the crystal-clear main facade. High-fidelity 3D assets, including aircraft and Ground Support Equipment (GSE), are meticulously placed to ground the futuristic design in a functional, high-energy operational context.
Interior
The interior design of the Maramureș International Airport terminal is a study in monumental warmth and intuitive passenger flow. The defining feature is the expansive, undulating ceiling finished in a rich, linear wood-toned texture, which serves to soften the cavernous volume and provide a sense of regional continuity. This organic overhead plane contrasts sharply with the sleek, high-gloss flooring that reflects the ample natural light flooding in through the full-height glazing.
Functional zones are delineated through minimalist, modular furniture and clear geometric partitions, maintaining an airy, “de-cluttered” atmosphere that reduces traveler anxiety. The result is a high-tech transit hub that feels sophisticated and professional, yet remains deeply connected to the natural materiality of the Maramureș landscape.
